DOS BRAZOS DE RIO TIGRE: THE LAST FRONTIER OF COSTA RICA
Gold mining in Rio Tigre
The Osa Peninsula is one of the last areas in Costa Rica to be developed. It lies on the southern pacific coast of the country, and is the home of the famous Corcovado Park. The Golfo Dulce is rich with a wide variety of sea life, including dolphins, turtles, and migrating whales. Various tours and activities such as kayaking, are available in Puerto Jimenez. There is plenty to do in the area before or after your stay at Bolita.
Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre (sometimes called just Dos Brazos, or just El Tigre), translated means two arms of the Tiger River, which originates deep in Corcovado Park. It's at the confluence of the two branches of Rio Tigre that the town is nestled, hidden in the heart of the Osa Peninsula. Not more than 40 years ago gold, and lots of it, was Dos Brazos' claim to fame, with some 3,000 gold miners inhabiting the area. Bar brawls, big mining equipment, land claim disputes, and a town brothel complete with jail cells, was the picture of Dos Brazos up until the early eighties. Today Dos Brazos is a sleepy little town of just 295 inhabitants. It's a small oasis of civilization, surrounded by the jungle of the forest reserve that encompasses Corcovado. If an authentic experience of an almost completely preserved way of life is what you are after, this is the place to find it.
